The Martini took shape in late 19th-century America, most likely from the sweeter Martinez. Over the next century it grew steadily drier. Less vermouth. More gin. Nothing to hide behind. That is what makes it such an honest test of a gin.

Gin 34 Nordic London Dry opens with classic juniper, then reveals basil, thyme, lingonberry and a soft floral lift, all in balance. Stirred ice-cold with a whisper of vermouth, it is crisp, aromatic and smoother than you expect.

The kind of Martini that makes you pause after the first sip.

How to make it

Chill a martini glass in the freezer, or fill it with ice water while you mix.

Pour the dry vermouth and Gin 34 Nordic London Dry into a mixing glass. Add plenty of fresh ice and stir smoothly for about 30 seconds, until the drink is ice-cold and the outside of the mixing glass is frosted.

Discard the ice water from your glass and strain the Martini in.

For a bright, aromatic finish, express a lemon twist over the surface and drop it in. For a more savory Martini, add a single olive on a pick. Either way, enjoy it while it is at its coldest.

From the Master Blender

Stir for about thirty seconds and never shake. You want silk in the glass, not shards of ice. Keep your vermouth in the fridge once it is open; it is a wine and fades quickly at room temperature. Fresh vermouth lets the botanicals in the gin come through clean and clear.
