Before there was the Martini, there was the Martinez. Recipes for it appear in the 1880s, and many drinks historians see it as the Martini’s ancestor. It was traditionally made with Old Tom gin, the softer, slightly sweeter gin style of the time.

Gin 34 Old Tom brings it home. Its rounded body and gentle sweetness meet sweet vermouth, a whisper of maraschino and orange bitters, creating a cocktail that is rich, smooth and quietly complex.

The original. Beautifully restored.

How to make it

Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

Add Gin 34 Old Tom, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur and orange bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice.

Stir for about 30 seconds, until very cold.

Strain into the chilled glass and express a lemon twist over the top.

From the Master Blender

Stir, never shake, and stir longer than you think: about 30 seconds. The Martinez should feel weighty and silky on the palate, and only patient stirring gives it that texture.
